Apartments for rent in Shangcheng District
Shangcheng is the commercial and administrative heart of Hangzhou. It holds both the Qianjiang CBD skyline and the historic lanes around Hefang Street and Wulin Square — two completely different ways of living, twenty minutes apart.
Rent data reviewed October 2026. Prices are our current asking rents, not a market index.
Living in Shangcheng District
This is the district with the widest range of property in the city: serviced towers with concierges in the CBD, 1990s walk-ups in the old lanes, and family compounds with schools and hospitals nearby. It is also the most expensive on average. If your priority is walking to work, eating well and being in the middle of everything, the premium is worth paying.
Neighbourhoods worth knowing
Shangcheng District is not one market. These are the three pockets foreign tenants ask about most, and what each one actually feels like to live in.
Qianjiang CBD 钱江新城
Glass towers, wide avenues, the riverfront and the city’s newest premium housing. Walk to the major office buildings and the civic centre.
Wulin Square 武林广场
The traditional city centre: department stores, metro interchange, older but solid apartment blocks. Maximum convenience, minimum charm.
Hefang Street 河坊街
Historic low-rise lanes, tea houses and craft shops. Characterful and central, but the housing stock is old and sound insulation varies enormously.

Shangcheng District questions
Is Shangcheng good for families?
Yes. The district has international schools, large hospitals and several family-oriented compounds, particularly around the Qianjiang CBD and the riverfront.
What does a family apartment cost in Shangcheng?
Three-bedrooms generally start around 12,000 CNY a month and reach 22,000 CNY or more for CBD skyline views or river-facing floors.
What is the difference between Qianjiang CBD and Wulin Square?
Qianjiang CBD is new, spacious and office-driven. Wulin Square is older, denser and more retail-focused, with better transport links but less space per apartment.
Can I rent without a car in Shangcheng?
Easily — it has the best metro coverage in the city, and most daily needs are within walking distance in the CBD and around Wulin.
Is Hefang Street a good place to live?
It is atmospheric and central, but the buildings are old. Ask about sound insulation and water pressure, and view the apartment in the evening when the street is busy.
