Living in Binjiang District
If your employer is one of the large technology companies, Binjiang removes the commute entirely — many staff live within a fifteen minute cycle of their office. The trade-off is that the district was built recently and quickly, so street life is thinner than in the historic centre and some compounds feel quiet at night. What it does have is the best ratio of building quality to rent anywhere in Hangzhou.
Neighbourhoods worth knowing
Binjiang District is not one market. These are the three pockets foreign tenants ask about most, and what each one actually feels like to live in.
Jiangnan Avenue 江南大道
The district’s main artery: offices, malls, metro stations and the highest concentration of serviced apartments. Practical rather than pretty.
Xingguang Avenue 星光大道
Riverside commercial strip with newer towers, restaurants and a walkable waterfront. The most popular pocket for people who want a view.
Changhe 长河
Older, quieter and cheaper, with low-rise housing and local wet markets. Good value if you do not need to be next to an office tower.

Reasonably. Hangzhou East Railway Station is 35 to 40 minutes by metro or car, and high-speed trains to Shanghai take about an hour from there.
Is it quiet at night?
Parts of it are very quiet. If you want restaurants and street life within walking distance, stay near Xingguang Avenue or Jiangnan Avenue rather than the outer compounds.
