Renting an apartment in Hangzhou as a foreigner

Hangzhou has eight districts that most international residents choose between, and the right one depends far more on your commute and lifestyle than on the price alone. Xihu District wraps around West Lake and the Xixi wetlands and is the most scenic option, with metro lines 1, 2 and 5 giving quick access to the rest of the city. Binjiang District, across the Qiantang River, is the technology corridor: newer buildings, wide river views and short commutes to many of the city's largest employers.

If space matters more than centrality, Yuhang and Linping districts in the west and north-east offer noticeably more square metres for the same rent, while Shangcheng District puts you in the commercial core around the Qianjiang CBD and Wulin Square. Xiaoshan, Gongshu and Qiantang round out the picture with Olympic Park river views, Grand Canal waterfront living and the Xiasha university town respectively.
