Apartments for rent in Gongshu District
Gongshu is built around the Grand Canal, whose waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The pace is slower than the CBD, the housing is a step cheaper, and the metro still puts you in the centre in twenty minutes.
Rent data reviewed October 2026. Prices are our current asking rents, not a market index.
Living in Gongshu District
The canal defines the district. Along it you find restored warehouse buildings, museums, tea houses and a genuinely pleasant walking route that runs for kilometres. Inland, Xiangfu and the streets north of Hushu South Road offer ordinary, well-built residential blocks at prices that undercut Xihu by a wide margin. It is a good compromise district — not the most fashionable, but comfortable and well connected.
Neighbourhoods worth knowing
Gongshu District is not one market. These are the three pockets foreign tenants ask about most, and what each one actually feels like to live in.
Gongchen Bridge 拱宸桥
The canal’s historic heart: museums, craft workshops, riverside cafes and restored low-rise housing. The most characterful part of the district.
Xiangfu 祥符
Dense new residential blocks with schools and supermarkets, served by metro. Straightforward family housing at reasonable rents.
Dadou Road 大兜路
A quiet historic street along the canal, with low-rise buildings and a slow, local atmosphere. Fewer amenities, more calm.

Gongshu District questions
Why live in Gongshu rather than Xihu?
You get a similar central position and metro access for roughly 15 to 20 percent less rent, and the canal waterfront is far quieter than the lake.
Is the canal waterfront noisy?
The opposite — it is one of the calmest parts of central Hangzhou. Weekend foot traffic near Gongchen Bridge is busy, but the residential streets behind it are quiet.
How much is a two-bedroom in Gongshu?
Most sit between 6,500 and 10,000 CNY a month. Renovated canal-side units command the top of that range.
Are there international schools nearby?
Not many inside the district. Families usually commute to schools in Xihu or Binjiang, which is 25 to 35 minutes by car.
Is Gongshu good for cycling?
Yes. The canal path is continuous for kilometres and connects to the city centre, which makes it one of the better districts for commuting by bike.
